In response to growing criticism and misinformation surrounding petroleum refining processes, Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has firmly defended the practice of blending petroleum products. Kyari addressed public concerns during a media briefing, clarifying that blending is a standard procedure in refineries worldwide and plays a critical role in meeting regulatory specifications for fuel products.
Blending: A Standard Global Practice
Kyari emphasised that blending is not an illicit activity but an essential component of refinery operations. “Every refinery blends. There is no refinery where you open a tap and rinse out the gasoline without blending. This is a global practice,” he stated. The process involves mixing various hydrocarbons to achieve desired fuel characteristics, ensuring compliance with local and international standards.
Public Concerns and Clarifications
Kyari’s remarks came after comments from Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, who called for greater transparency in refinery operations. Falana expressed scepticism about NNPCL’s reported production capacity and urged collaboration with labour unions to ensure accountability.
In addressing allegations of conflicts of interest, Kyari categorically denied owning or operating any blending plants, either personally or by proxy, outside Nigeria. He warned of strict sanctions for any NNPCL staff found engaging in unethical practices, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to integrity and national energy security.
