Femi Adesina, the former media adviser to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has described the former leader as a man deeply committed to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. In a tribute to celebrate Buhari’s 82nd birthday on Tuesday, Adesina highlighted the ex-president’s decision to keep fuel subsidies during his administration as an example of his care for the masses.
Adesina referred to Buhari as Ore Mekunu, a Yoruba phrase meaning “friend of the poor,” and noted that even in retirement, he continues to attract support and admiration from many Nigerians.
Why Buhari Kept Fuel Subsidies
Reflecting on Buhari’s leadership, Adesina explained that the decision to maintain fuel subsidies was driven by Buhari’s desire to shield Nigerians from economic hardship. Despite knowing that subsidies were costly and often exploited by corrupt individuals, Buhari believed removing them could worsen the struggles of ordinary citizens.
“When oil prices were high sometimes reaching $140 per barrel what benefits did the common man enjoy? Nothing. So, why should they suffer the consequences when prices fall?” Adesina recounted, describing Buhari’s argument during cabinet discussions.
Adesina added that while Buhari recognised the need for subsidy removal, he prioritised stability and avoided policies that could harm Nigerians. This consideration, Adesina said, was rooted in Buhari’s empathy for the everyday struggles of the people.
Buhari’s Legacy as a People’s President
Adesina highlighted that almost two years after leaving office, Buhari remains beloved by many for his humble and caring nature. He attributed this enduring admiration to Buhari’s consistent focus on protecting the interests of the less privileged during his tenure.
“Even in retirement, he draws people like a magnet because of his connection with the poor,” Adesina said.

The former adviser’s tribute paints Buhari as a leader who prioritised the well-being of Nigerians, even when faced with tough decisions. While some criticised his choice to maintain fuel subsidies, Adesina insists it was a reflection of his genuine concern for the people.
