Nigerian households are beginning to enjoy relief from months of soaring cooking gas prices as the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has fallen from about ₦2,200 per kilogramme to around ₦1,500/kg, representing a 31.8 per cent decline on improved supply and coordinated interventions across the domestic market.
The price drop follows months of supply disruptions that forced many households to reduce consumption or switch to alternative cooking fuels. Industry stakeholders say improved product availability and stronger collaboration between government and private operators have helped restore confidence to the market.
President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Edu Inyang, attributed the decline to sustained engagements among marketers, regulators and government agencies aimed at removing supply bottlenecks.
"The consultations have yielded positive results. Product availability has improved and confidence has returned to the market, which has helped bring down prices," Inyang said.
The improvement follows an emergency stakeholders' meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, where regulators, security agencies and industry operators agreed on measures to tackle hoarding, diversion and other market distortions. The government directed the NMDPRA to intensify market monitoring in collaboration with the DSS, EFCC and the Nigeria Police Force to improve supply and stabilise prices.
The NMDPRA said national LPG supply sufficiency has improved from 11 days to 22 days, while average daily supply increased from 4,262 metric tonnes in May to 5,040 metric tonnes in June, reflecting stronger market availability.
Fresh imports are also supporting the recovery. Petroleumprice.ng's latest vessel arrival report recorded the arrival of the ECO GALAXY, carrying 3,800 metric tonnes of butane for Stockgap in Port Harcourt, adding to inventories as marketers continue to replenish stocks.
The recent decline in cooking gas prices suggests supply conditions are gradually improving. With fresh cargoes arriving, domestic production expected to increase and regulators stepping up market oversight, industry players believe prices could ease further if international LPG prices, exchange rates and logistics costs remain favourable. The improved outlook is expected to provide much-needed relief for households while supporting Nigeria's drive towards cleaner cooking energy.
