Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has taken another significant step in solidifying his influence in the continent’s energy and industrial sectors. During a strategic visit to Angola last week, Dangote finalised discussions with President João Lourenço for a new refinery project, alongside other ventures in oil, gas, and cement industries.
This development comes on the heels of the success of the Dangote Refinery in Lagos, a 650,000-barrel-per-day facility that has drastically reduced Africa’s reliance on European fuel imports. The landmark project has positioned Nigeria as a regional refining hub, challenging global refining dynamics.
A Game-Changing Refinery Partnership
Dangote’s focus in Angola centres on the Lobito Refinery project in Benguela Province, with a capacity of 200,000 barrels per day. Following Angola’s call for private investors to acquire 70% equity in the project, Dangote is expected to seize a substantial share of the venture. State-owned Sonangol will retain the remaining 30%.
