Lagos commuters battled a nightmare on Tuesday night as Dangote Refinery’s fuel distribution convoy brought the Lekki-Epe Expressway to a grinding halt. As a result, thousands of motorists spent between six and seven hours stuck in traffic, while tankers crawled toward depots and filling stations across the city.
In addition, eyewitnesses confirmed that “thousands of Dangote trucks” lined the stretch along Bonny Island through the Lekki-Epe Express Way. Consequently, what should have been a busy but moving highway quickly turned into a stationary parking lot.
LASTMA Confirms Tankers Triggered Congestion
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) traced the gridlock directly to tanker movements from Dangote Refinery. In a statement published on X by the agency which read “Lekki-Epe Expressway is presently experiencing a pronounced level of vehicular congestion, precipitated by a substantial influx of Dangote Tankers currently navigating inward towards Lekki, thereby contributing to the heightened traffic volumes on the thoroughfare”. According to the agency, the congestion peaked around 11:30 p.m., when the tankers surged into the Lekki corridor, forcing traffic to slow to a crawl and leaving many commuters stranded deep into the night.
Refinery Rollout Meets Lagos Road Limits
Dangote Refinery, on the other hand, has intensified its fuel distribution plan in recent weeks to stabilize the market and boost availability. However, this rollout has collided with Lagos’ fragile road infrastructure. The Lekki-Epe Expressway, which already struggles under heavy commuter traffic, buckled under the sudden weight of tankers.
As a result, while the refinery’s strategy promises to ease pump price fluctuations, it is simultaneously creating new challenges in Nigeria’s busiest commercial hub.
National Energy Gains, Local Urban Pains
On a broader scale, the refinery’s entry represents a significant turning point for Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector. By producing locally, Dangote is gradually reducing the nation’s dependence on imported fuel and reshaping market dynamics.
