Cameroon’s state-owned oil refiner, Sonara, has signed an agreement with Nigeria’s Dangote Group and Lagos-based MRS Oil & Gas Company to supply refined petroleum products to the Central African country.
The agreement, signed in Lagos on October 22, 2026, is designed to provide Cameroon with a more stable and sustainable supply of petroleum products as fuel costs rise amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Sonara announced the partnership on Friday, October 30, saying the arrangement would support the country’s efforts to secure reliable fuel supplies amid growing uncertainty in international energy markets.
Cameroon has depended entirely on imported refined petroleum products since 2019, when an explosion damaged its only refinery, leaving the country reliant on external suppliers to meet domestic demand.
The partnership brings together Dangote Group, which operates Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery, and MRS Oil & Gas Company to support petroleum product supply to the Cameroonian market.
However, Sonara said the ceremony planned to formally launch the partnership had been postponed because of last-minute scheduling constraints involving Dangote Group president, Aliko Dangote. A new date is expected to be announced later.
The agreement could strengthen regional petroleum product trade and create an additional supply channel for Cameroon, although the announcement did not disclose the expected volumes, product categories, delivery schedule or financial terms.
For Nigeria’s downstream sector, the deal highlights the potential for domestic refining capacity to serve markets beyond the borders. As regional demand for reliable fuel supplies grows, cross-border arrangements could create opportunities for refiners and distribution companies while supporting wider energy trade across Africa.
