The Delta State Government has confirmed steady progress on its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations in Asaba and Warri.
The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, shared this update during an inspection in Asaba. He said the Asaba station is under active construction, while the Warri facility is nearly ready and only waiting for equipment installation.
Agofure revealed that the state partnered with NIPCO Gas Limited through a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement covers the setup of CNG stations aimed at encouraging the use of cleaner, cheaper fuel in Delta’s transport sector.
“I visit both sites weekly to check the pace and quality of work,” the commissioner said. “The Asaba project is moving well, and I believe they’ll meet the delivery timeline. Warri is done structurally and just needs the final equipment before launch.”
The commissioner praised NIPCO’s commitment and said the firm has so far kept to the MoU’s terms. According to him, both stations will support the state’s broader clean energy goals and help cut fuel costs for transport operators.
He also noted the importance of vehicle conversion in making the shift to CNG. A conversion centre is currently being built within the Asaba station to help motorists switch from petrol to gas-powered engines.
However, Agofure could not confirm if Warri would have the same facility. He promised to follow up and ensure uniform support across both locations.
Delta’s CNG project forms part of wider state plans to modernize transportation and reduce dependency on petrol. It aligns with Nigeria’s national energy transition roadmap and reflects a growing push toward environmentally friendly fuel options.
Agofure said he would continue to monitor the projects and ensure timely delivery to the public.
