Norway-based offshore drilling contractor Dolphin Drilling has emerged victorious in its arbitration proceedings against Lagos-based General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL). The dispute revolved around the termination of a drilling contract involving the Blackford Dolphin rig off the coast of Nigeria.
$100 Million Awarded to Dolphin Drilling
Dolphin Drilling has disclosed that the arbitration ruling, made in its favour, will allow it to recover approximately $100 million. With the final award now confirmed, the company plans to commence collection efforts immediately.
This arbitration marks the resolution of a long-standing contractual dispute. It began when Dolphin Drilling terminated the contract with GHL and sought legal recourse to recover outstanding payments.
Challenges Overcome in Nigerian Courts
The arbitration process also involved multiple legal hurdles in Nigeria. Dolphin Drilling faced an interim injunction obtained by GHL to prevent the removal of the Blackford Dolphin rig from Nigerian waters. While the Norwegian firm successfully had the ex parte order lifted, it continued to deal with claims brought forward by Technova Africa International (Technova) in Nigerian courts.
To navigate these challenges, Dolphin Drilling provided a $20 million bank guarantee, enabling the removal of the Blackford Dolphin rig. The semi-submersible rig subsequently left Nigerian waters and continued its journey to India.
New Ventures in India
In November 2024, the Blackford Dolphin rig began a 14-month hydrocarbon exploration campaign with Oil India. Built in 1974 and featuring an enhanced Aker H-3 design, the rig can accommodate 120 personnel. This project marks a new chapter for Dolphin Drilling as it pivots to international operations.
A Milestone Victory for Dolphin Drilling
The arbitration victory is a significant milestone for Dolphin Drilling, ensuring financial recovery and operational continuity. As the company advances with its global drilling commitments, the resolution of this dispute solidifies its standing in the offshore energy market.
For Dolphin Drilling, the successful arbitration underscores the importance of robust contractual enforcement mechanisms in the global oil and gas sector, particularly in high-stakes jurisdictions like Nigeria.
