The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) hosted a webinar on October 23, 2024, to explore the benefits and challenges of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion. The webinar, titled “Driving the Energy Transition: CNG Conversion,” focused on cost savings, safety, and best practices for adopting CNG.
One of the key advantages of CNG conversion highlighted by Zayyanu Tambari Yabo, Coordinator for the Presidential CNG Initiative, is the significant cost savings for companies that switch from diesel-powered trucks. However, Oluwasegun Olajuwan of THLD Group added that the importance of using high-quality components to ensure safety. He warned against the risks associated with substandard materials, citing a recent explosion as a cautionary tale.
Engineer Olalekan Omoniyi of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) reassured participants that CNG is a safe fuel option, but stressed the need for strict adherence to safety guidelines. He emphasized the importance of verifying product information and ensuring that conversion centers and refueling stations are properly certified.
Ujiadughele Nosiediana Ray, Deputy Manager of Operations at NIPCO Gas, presented a CNG adoption strategy that includes establishing a national gas pipeline network and offering free vehicle health check-up camps. He also advocated for skill development programs to address the shortage of skilled CNG technicians.
To promote CNG adoption, Ray called for stricter enforcement against illegal and unsafe conversion methods. He also suggested providing subsidies to support companies that promote CNG. Additionally, he emphasised the need to dispel misconceptions about CNG safety and highlighted the importance of regular vehicle maintenance.
In conclusion, the webinar highlighted the potential benefits of CNG conversion, including cost savings and environmental advantages. However, it also emphasised the importance of safety and adherence to industry standards to ensure a successful transition.
