The Edo State Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have finalised plans to build a 10,000 barrels-per-day condensate refinery in the state. The project is expected to boost industrial activity and strengthen fuel supply across the South-South region.
The refinery will sit across Oredo and Orhionmwon Local Government Areas. Construction is projected to last between 24 and 36 months.
When completed, the facility will produce about 20 truckloads of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 10 truckloads of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) daily. These volumes will serve Edo and neighbouring states, improving product availability in the region.
Governor Monday Okpebholo disclosed the development while receiving NNPCL’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, and his team at the Government House in Benin City.
He described the refinery as a strategic investment that aligns with the Federal Government’s economic reform agenda. According to him, the project will create jobs, reduce poverty, and expand the state’s industrial base.
Importantly, the governor pledged full support for the initiative. The state, he said, will provide land, issue Certificates of Occupancy, and ensure adequate security and logistics to guarantee smooth execution.
Investment to Drive Jobs, Industrial Growth
In his remarks, Dagazau said the condensate refinery represents a sustainable investment designed to increase revenue and stimulate economic growth. He added that the project will open up new employment opportunities for residents.
Similarly, NNPCL’s Chief Downstream Investment Officer, Ikedichi Dick-Nwoke, noted that the refinery will position Edo as an emerging energy and industrial hub. Over time, he said, the project will strengthen investor confidence and expand regional fuel supply.
Overall, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to grow domestic refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
