The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has said the continued border closure across several parts of the country is no longer logical following the fuel subsidy removal of May 29, 2023. He urged the Federal Government to reopen all remaining land borders to strengthen trade and ease movement across the sub-region.
The traditional ruler made the call when the outgoing Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, Comptroller Gambo Aliyu, visited him at his Bodija residence in Ibadan.
Subsidy Removal Changed Everything — Olubadan
Ladoja recalled that the land borders were closed in 2019 under former President Muhammadu Buhari to curb smuggling. Although major points like Seme and Idiroko have been reopened, several others remain shut. He argued that the original reasons for the policy no longer apply.
According to him, “Following the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government on May 29, 2023, there was no longer a reason for the continued closure of the remaining land borders.”
He stressed that the economic realities have changed, making the sustained closure unnecessary. The monarch noted that reopening all borders would improve legitimate cross-border trade, promote ECOWAS free-movement agreements, and reduce smuggling incentives.
Ladoja added, “Our policies must reflect present realities. If subsidy has gone, then the border closure should go too.”
Reopen Borders but Strengthen Security — Monarch Warns
Despite pushing for full reopening, the Olubadan cautioned that security agencies must remain vigilant. He commended the Customs Service for its anti-smuggling operations but insisted that more must be done to prevent dangerous items from entering the country.
He said, “Our borders, seaports and airports must be policed properly to curb the entry of illegal arms and ammunition, drugs, substandard products and other prohibited items.”
Ladoja explained that opening the borders without improving surveillance would expose the country to security risks. Therefore, he called for better coordination among Customs, immigration, and other security outfits.
Customs Controller Appreciates Royal Support
Earlier, Comptroller Aliyu thanked the Olubadan and the entire traditional institution in Oyo State for supporting him during his tenure. He said, “I appreciate Your Imperial Majesty for the support you gave me. I hope the same support is extended to my successor.”
