Hormuz Crisis: Global Oil System Faces Supply Shock

A quiet but dangerous reality is unfolding in global energy markets as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz expose how fragile the world’s oil supply chain truly is. What began as a regional conflict has now evolved into a full-blown supply threat, with analysts warning that prolonged disruption could trigger a global fuel crisis.

As at the time of writing 6:30 PM (WAT), crude benchmarks remain elevated amid persistent uncertainty. Brent crude trades at $112.2 per barrel (+3.26%), WTI stands at $98.23 (+2.80%), while Murban crude has surged sharply to $146.4 (+18.00%), reflecting heightened fears of supply shortages.

At the centre of the crisis is the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint through which about 20% of global oil supply flows daily. A sustained disruption could remove over 20 million barrels per day from the market volumes that current global systems are simply not equipped to replace in the short term.

In response, the International Energy Agency has coordinated emergency releases from strategic reserves, but these measures offer only temporary relief. Alternative pipelines across Saudi Arabia and the UAE provide limited backup capacity, leaving a significant supply gap that continues to unsettle global markets.

For countries like Nigeria, the impact is immediate and severe. Rising crude prices are already feeding into higher petrol costs, increased transportation fares, and broader inflationary pressure, underscoring how global supply disruptions quickly translate into domestic economic strain.
