A fuel-laden tanker exploded in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Monday morning, killing several people and sparking multiple explosions. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. near Rochas Foundation School, along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass from Kwangila to Dan Magaji.
The collision, involving two tankers and two passenger Golf cars, ignited five loud blasts, sending towering flames and thick black smoke into the sky. Eyewitnesses said all the occupants of the cars died instantly, except one driver who survived with severe burns.
Emergency responders, security personnel, and fire service teams rushed to the scene. They cordoned off the area and diverted motorists and pedestrians away as rescue and recovery operations continued. Officials have yet to release the exact casualty figure.
“This is a very sad day for our community. The fire was so intense that nothing could be done immediately to save those trapped,” a local resident lamented.
Similar Tragedy in Jigawa State
In July, a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, claimed at least 105 lives. The tanker driver reportedly lost control while travelling from Kano. Residents rushed to scoop fuel from the wreck, unaware of the danger, before a massive blast killed scores, most burned beyond recognition. Fifty-five people sustained injuries, with some transferred from Ringim General Hospital to Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu, due to limited capacity.
Deadly Crash on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway
In June, at least five people died and nine others suffered injuries in multiple crashes along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), a speeding truck with brake failure rammed into a Mazda bus attempting a turn, causing the fatalities.
