Ikuru Town in Andoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, has witnessed a remarkable transformation, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Lekoil & Gas Ltd and Green Energy International Ltd. These companies, operating under the Otakiko Joint Venture, have reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable community development by addressing key challenges in the region.
Education Revitalised
After a devastating thunderstorm damaged the roofs of several buildings at the Community Secondary School in Ikuru Town, the Otakiko Joint Venture stepped in to rehabilitate the affected structures. The restored facilities, including teachers’ quarters, are expected to boost students’ learning environment and enhance the commitment of educators.
Minawari Drepie, the Lead for Food Security and Communication at Lekoil & Gas Ltd, highlighted the transformative impact of the initiative:
“This project will increase the students’ interest in learning and the commitment of teachers to their duties, fostering academic progress.”
The company’s emphasis on education reflects its belief that access to quality learning is a cornerstone of prosperity for any community.
Tackling Water Scarcity
Another critical intervention is the Ikuru Town Water Project, launched during a recent commissioning ceremony. Planned in three phases, the project aims to address the longstanding issue of potable water shortages in the riverine community. When completed, it promises to alleviate one of the most pressing challenges faced by the residents.
A Model of Collaboration
The initiatives are part of the requirements under Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which mandates operators to contribute to host communities’ development. Lekoil & Gas Ltd, in partnership with Green Energy, has demonstrated its commitment to fulfilling these obligations while working closely with the Ikuru Host Community Development Trust (HCDT).
The Chairman of the HCDT expressed gratitude:
“This progress is a result of sacrifices made by the community, leveraging funds allocated to Ikuru Town for these projects.”
Calls for Expansion
While the efforts have been lauded, community representatives have called for an extension of these initiatives to further address local needs. The success of the school rehabilitation and water project highlights the potential of public-private partnerships to drive meaningful change in underserved areas.
A Brighter Future for Ikuru Town
As the residents of Ikuru Town begin to reap the benefits of these transformative projects, the collaboration between Lekoil, Green Energy, and local stakeholders stands as a testament to what can be achieved when businesses invest in their host communities. This holistic approach to development fosters not just goodwill but also sustainable progress for generations to come.
From restoring educational infrastructure to tackling water scarcity, Lekoil & Gas Ltd and its partners have set a new standard for corporate responsibility in Nigeria.
