As Dangote Petroleum Refinery moves towards a planned stock market listing, attention is shifting beyond its refining capacity and production milestones to the people responsible for providing strategic and corporate oversight of the $20 billion industrial complex.

According to Nairametrics, the refinery has a 10-member board comprising executives, energy-sector veterans, financiers, legal professionals and corporate leaders with experience across refining, oil and gas, manufacturing, investment and governance.

The publication said the board is expected to provide strategic direction as the refinery enters a new phase focused on public ownership, investor engagement and long-term growth.

1. Aliko Dangote: President/Group Chief Executive

Aliko Dangote remains the driving force behind the refinery and the wider Dangote Group. He has led the group’s expansion from commodity trading into major manufacturing businesses, including cement, sugar, fertiliser and refining.

As the controlling shareholder and founder of the refinery, Dangote provides the board with the strategic vision behind the project and its broader role in Nigeria and Africa’s petroleum-product supply chain.

2. David Bird: Managing Director/CEO

David Bird is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The former Shell executive joined the company with extensive international experience in refining and energy operations.

Before joining Dangote, Bird was CEO of OQ8, Oman’s 230,000-barrels-per-day refinery, and spent 14 years at Shell, where he rose to Vice President of Prelude FLNG. His background gives the refinery direct international refining and operational expertise at executive level.

3. Fatima Aliko-Dangote: Non-Executive Director

Fatima Aliko-Dangote is Group Executive Director, Commercial Operations, at Dangote Industries Limited. Her responsibilities span several strategic businesses, including Dangote Refinery & Petrochemicals, Dangote Fertiliser and West Africa Exploration & Production.

She also oversees areas including strategic procurement, branding, communications and group administration, bringing commercial and group-level experience to the refinery’s board.

4. Olakunle Alake: Non-Executive Director

Olakunle Alake, Group Vice President at Dangote Industries Limited, has spent more than three decades within the organisation. He previously served as Group Managing Director, with responsibilities spanning finance, strategy, operations and corporate development.

Alake also serves on the boards of Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugar and NASCON Allied Industries, giving him extensive experience across the group’s listed and operating businesses.

5. Devakumar Edwin: Non-Executive Director

Devakumar Edwin, Group Vice President for Oil, Gas and Fertiliser, has been closely involved in Dangote’s industrial expansion since joining the group in 1992.

His background includes engineering, project management and large-scale manufacturing operations. He has previously served as Managing Director of Obajana Cement and Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement, making his experience particularly relevant to the refinery’s industrial operations.

6. Adedapo Segun: Non-Executive Director

Adedapo Segun is Group Chief Financial Officer of NNPC Limited and brings extensive experience in treasury, corporate finance and investor relations to the board.

His position is particularly significant given NNPC’s equity interest in Dangote Refinery. Since joining NNPC in 2016, Segun has been involved in treasury and financing initiatives and became the company’s pioneer Chief Finance and Investor Relations Officer following its transition to a limited liability company.

7. Aliyu Suleiman: Non-Executive Director

Aliyu Suleiman, Group Chief Strategy Officer of Dangote Industries Limited, has responsibility for strategy, business development, mergers and acquisitions, transformation and digital strategy.

He also coordinated the commercial start-up of Dangote Refinery and led the transaction that resulted in NNPC acquiring an equity stake in the project, giving him direct knowledge of the refinery’s commercial development.

8. Viswanathan Shankar: Independent Non-Executive Director

Viswanathan Shankar brings international banking, investment and emerging-market experience to the board. He is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Gateway Partners, an investment firm focused on Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Before establishing Gateway Partners, Shankar held senior positions at Standard Chartered and Bank of America and served on the boards of several public and private institutions. His investment background is particularly relevant as the refinery prepares to engage a wider pool of investors.

9. Abubakar B. Mahmoud, SAN: Independent Executive Director

Abubakar B. Mahmoud, SAN, brings more than four decades of legal and corporate governance experience. He is Managing Partner of Dikko & Mahmoud and has advised public and private-sector clients on complex commercial transactions and disputes.

His previous board experience includes MTN Nigeria, Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers and Nigerian Exchange Limited. He also served as President of the Nigerian Bar Association from 2016 to 2018.

10. Mutiu Sunmonu: Independent Executive Director

Dr Mutiu Sunmonu brings more than 40 years of experience in the global oil and gas industry, most of it with Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria.

He rose to become Managing Director and Country Chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria, overseeing major operations and a workforce of more than 4,000 employees. Since retiring from Shell in 2015, he has held several board and advisory positions across energy, engineering, insurance and education.

The composition of the board gives Dangote Refinery a combination of refining and operational expertise, Nigerian oil and gas experience, financial and investment knowledge, legal oversight and corporate strategy. As the company progresses towards a public listing, these capabilities will become increasingly important in managing the transition from a closely controlled industrial project to a company accountable to a broader shareholder base.

Dangote Refinery has signed its IPO documents with advisers and other stakeholders as it prepares for the next stage of its corporate development.
