Petroleumprice.ng has named the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) as Downstream Petroleum Industry Advocate of the Year at the 2025 Petroleum Prize, Recognition and Awards.
The recognition reflects MEMAN’s sustained advocacy and industry representation in 2025. It also highlights the association’s structured engagement across Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
The year was marked by heightened regulatory activity and market restructuring. Safety concerns intensified, while demand increased for credible, data-driven policy engagement across the industry.
The decision was based on structured feedback from industry players. It was supported by an independent assessment under the Petroleum Prize framework.
Evaluation focused on Industry Representation, Membership Engagement, Research and Development, and Advocacy and Lobbying. Emphasis was placed on measurable outcomes, consistency, and sector-wide relevance.
MEMAN’s Performance Across Key Advocacy Indicators
MEMAN ranked strongly across four core indicators used to assess advocacy effectiveness and institutional impact in the downstream petroleum industry during 2025.
Industry Representation (95%)
MEMAN demonstrated strong industry representation through sustained engagement across regulatory, commercial, and policy platforms.
The association remained an active member of the Oil Trading & Logistics (OTL) Planning Committee. Through this role, it contributed to industry discourse and influenced policy conversations shaping Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market.
Throughout the year, MEMAN engaged continuously with Dangote Petroleum Refinery, industry operators, government agencies, and sector associations. These engagements focused on alignment, cooperation, and coexistence within a rapidly evolving market environment.
Membership Engagement (90%)
Membership engagement remained a core strength for MEMAN in 2025.
The association implemented an internal customer service campaign across member companies. Pump integrity was integrated as a service regulation.
MEMAN conducted pump integrity checks at member retail stations. It also promoted customer complaint lines nationwide to improve accountability and responsiveness to consumer concerns.
The MEMAN Competency Centre supported engagement and capacity development. During the year, the centre hosted 12 webinars.
Sessions covered press training, media engagement, and alternative energy adoption. Topics included E10 ethanol blending, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), solar energy, and electric vehicles.
Youth empowerment initiatives complemented these efforts. MEMAN engaged Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in collaboration with Cisco.
These sessions exposed students to industry realities and career pathways. Professionals from MEMAN member companies shared practical insights and hands-on experience.
Research and Development (90%)
MEMAN strengthened evidence-based advocacy through improved access to credible market intelligence.
In 2025, the association established a partnership with S&P Global. The collaboration enhanced access to data, analytics, and insights to support informed decision-making across the downstream sector.
Transparency initiatives reinforced research and information dissemination. MEMAN consistently published its Daily Bulletin throughout the year.
The bulletin provided local and international pricing data. It also tracked daily market developments, improving visibility and stakeholder confidence.
Advocacy and Lobbying (92%)
Advocacy and lobbying represented MEMAN’s strongest performance area in 2025.
The association advanced road safety initiatives through active participation in the Technical Working Committee established by the Authority.
MEMAN worked alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), NMDPRA, IPMAN, PETROAN, and DAPPMAN.
It also conducted road shows and targeted engagement sessions with truck drivers and transport unions.
A nationwide public sensitisation campaign addressed the dangers of fuel scooping following tanker accidents. The campaign educated communities on associated risks and appropriate response actions.
Policy advocacy was a prominent feature of the year. MEMAN led industry-wide collaboration with the Lubricants Producers Association of Nigeria (LUPAN) and the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (FMITI).
The engagement advanced the National Lubricants Policy, which remains pending approval. MEMAN reviewed the draft policy, focusing on product integrity, regulatory oversight, and counterfeiting prevention.
The recognition of MEMAN as Downstream Petroleum Industry Advocate of the Year reinforces the Petroleum Prize’s emphasis on structured advocacy, stakeholder participation, and performance-based assessment. It positions the association as a reference point for policy engagement, industry coordination, and institutional leadership within Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
