The Nigerian Gas Association (NGA) has made a compelling call to the Federal Government of Nigeria to implement a comprehensive transportation policy prioritising gas-powered vehicles for public transportation. This policy, also applicable to government activities, can be adopted at state and local government levels.
According to NGA President, Mr. Akachukwu Nwokedi, “The transition to gas is not just an environmental imperative but an economic one. With potential operational cost savings of up to 70%, natural gas represents a tremendous opportunity for Nigeria’s economy to become more efficient and eco-friendlier.”
The NGA commended the government’s incremental adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for transportation and urged sustained momentum. The Association acknowledged the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative’s efforts in deploying CNG conversion kits and encouraged further advancements.
Nigeria can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and promote economic growth through the adoption of gas-powered transportation.
The transition to natural gas will also enhance energy efficiency, reduce reliance on traditional fuels, and attract necessary investment in downstream infrastructure.
The NGA congratulated Greenville LNG on successfully completing its second test drive of LNG-powered trains, marking another milestone in Nigeria’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.
As the apex organization representing stakeholders in the gas sector, the NGA champions eco-friendly practices and advocates for natural gas as a cleaner, more sustainable fuel option. The Association’s commitment to promoting gas-powered transportation is driven by its potential to transform Nigeria’s transportation sector and contribute to the nation’s sustainability goals.
Mr. Nwokedi emphasised the broader implications of this shift towards natural gas-powered transportation, extending to heavy-duty vehicles and trucks, making the movement of goods and products more affordable with positive benefits to end-users.
