Communities across Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta have renewed calls for an immediate and permanent ban on gas flaring, warning that decades of unchecked emissions continue to devastate livelihoods, damage ecosystems, and threaten public health in the country’s petroleum-producing heartland.
The renewed demand comes amid growing concerns that despite repeated government commitments and regulatory frameworks aimed at ending routine gas flaring, many oil-producing communities remain exposed to environmental pollution linked to upstream oil and gas operations.
Speaking during activities held to commemorate the Global Week of Action in Port Harcourt, community leaders, environmental advocates, youth groups, and civil society organisations urged the Federal Government to move beyond policy declarations and enforce stricter compliance measures against oil and gas companies that continue to flare associated gas.
According to stakeholders, gas flaring has remained one of the most visible symbols of environmental injustice in the Niger Delta, contributing to air pollution, acid rain, declining agricultural yields, contaminated water sources, and increased health risks for millions of residents living near oil facilities.
Participants argued that while Nigeria remains one of Africa’s largest oil producers, host communities continue to bear the environmental costs of energy production without receiving adequate protection or remediation. They noted that many communities have endured years of degraded farmlands and shrinking fishing activities, resulting in reduced income opportunities and worsening socio-economic conditions.
The stakeholders also expressed concern that continued flaring undermines Nigeria’s climate commitments and deprives the country of valuable natural gas resources that could be harnessed for power generation, industrial development, and domestic energy security.
Community representatives called on regulators to strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, insisting that penalties alone have not been sufficient to discourage the practice. They urged authorities to ensure that oil producers adopt technologies capable of capturing and commercialising associated gas rather than releasing it into the atmosphere.
Beyond environmental concerns, participants advocated increased investment in renewable energy projects across the Niger Delta, arguing that the region is well positioned to benefit from solar and other clean energy initiatives that can create jobs while supporting a gradual transition to a lower-carbon economy.
The renewed campaign reflects growing pressure on policymakers to address long-standing environmental grievances in the Niger Delta as global attention increasingly shifts toward sustainability and cleaner energy development. For many residents, ending gas flaring is no longer just an environmental issue but a critical test of the government's commitment to protecting host communities and ensuring that resource extraction delivers tangible benefits to the people most affected by it.
Industry observers note that the latest push could intensify discussions around Nigeria’s energy transition agenda, particularly as the country seeks to balance its ambition to increase oil and gas production with rising demands for environmental accountability and sustainable development.
