Nigeria is ramping up its efforts to stop oil theft in the Niger Delta region as it works toward a major goal of producing 3 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) by 2025. The country, which relies on oil for most of its revenue and foreign earnings, has faced huge financial losses due to widespread oil theft.
While Nigeria’s 2024 budget estimates oil production at 2.06 million bpd, the actual figure is currently around 1.8 million bpd, according to official records.
To address this, the government launched “Delta Sanity” (OPDS), a special operation led by the petroleum ministry and the Nigerian Navy. This operation has now entered its second phase, bringing in advanced equipment like armed drones, attack helicopters, and enhanced intelligence to tackle oil theft.
Naval Chief Emmanuel Ogalla’s Optimism
The Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla, highlighted the success of the operation. He noted that oil production rose from 1.4 million bpd in 2023 to 1.8 million bpd in 2024. “With all the new resources we’re deploying, we are confident of reaching and surpassing our target of 3 million bpd,” Ogalla said during a ceremony in Port Harcourt.
Support from Rivers State
To further boost the crackdown on oil theft, the Rivers State government recently donated six gunboats to the Navy. This additional support aims to strengthen security in the region.
Government’s Vision
Junior Oil Minister Heineken Lokpobiri explained that when he assumed office in August 2023, Nigeria’s daily oil production was just over 1 million bpd. “Our target of 3 million bpd by 2025 is achievable, especially with the expanded second phase of OPDS,” he stated.
A Critical Mission
As Africa’s top oil producer, Nigeria depends heavily on oil, which accounts for about two-thirds of its state revenue and over 90% of its foreign currency earnings. The success of Delta Sanity is expected to boost production, stabilise finances, and secure more revenue for the government.
The increased oil output also comes at a crucial time when Nigeria seeks to strengthen its economy and reduce reliance on borrowed funds. By focusing on cutting oil theft and improving security, the country is taking important steps toward reaching its ambitious production goals.
