The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has declared that Nigeria is strategically positioned to become a global superpower in the energy transition landscape, leveraging its population of over 200 million people and vast natural gas resources.
Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of the NUPRC, made this known during the 2024 annual conference of the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC), themed “Gas as Energy Transition Fuel: Navigating Nigeria’s Trilemma of Finance, Energy Security, and International Politics”. Komolafe, represented by Mr Paul Osu, Director of Lagos Operations, emphasised that gas remains a crucial transition fuel in addressing the nation’s energy challenges.
He highlighted the importance of energy security, stressing that it is key to national development. “For Nigeria, this means ensuring that our growing population has access to affordable, reliable energy while maintaining a balanced energy mix that shields us from global market volatility and geopolitics,” Komolafe stated.
The NUPRC head also reaffirmed the importance of the Decade of Gas Initiative, which seeks to position natural gas as the engine of Nigeria’s economic growth and a driver of environmental sustainability. This aligns with both global climate goals and Nigeria’s energy security objectives.
In his address, Komolafe noted the post-Paris Agreement shift towards carbon neutrality and the increasing demand for low-carbon energy alternatives. He called for enhanced collaboration to unlock Nigeria’s vast energy potential, advocating for energy justice, equity, and inclusivity in the country’s energy transition journey.
“The global agenda is clear, but for resource-rich developing economies like Nigeria, we must calibrate our strategy to reflect geography, history, and politics while ensuring energy justice,” he said.
Komolafe emphasised that Nigeria’s energy future lies in the utilisation of its abundant hydrocarbon resources to drive shared prosperity, energy affordability, and energy sovereignty. He added that natural gas is seen as Nigeria’s “destination fuel,” projecting that it will play a major role in the nation’s energy mix by 2030 and beyond.
To realise this vision, the government has declared the period from 2021 to 2030 as the “Decade of Gas,” with the aim of driving infrastructure and industrial development. Komolafe noted that substantial progress has been made, including aggregating gas demand and supply, outlining infrastructure requirements, and establishing a pricing framework to attract investments.
“As we discuss pathways to our collective energy future, this conference serves as a call to action for enhanced collaboration in unlocking the vast opportunities that exist in Nigeria for energy security and shared prosperity,” he concluded.
With Nigeria’s commitment to natural gas as its transition fuel, the nation is expected to play a significant role in the global energy landscape, while ensuring sustainable economic development and climate resilience.
