Nigeria to Boost Crude Oil Output by 30,000 bpd with New FPSO

Nigeria is set to increase its crude oil production by 30,000 barrels per day (bpd) with the inauguration of a $315 million Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. The project, unveiled by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Dubai, marks a major milestone as the first FPSO fully funded by a Nigerian indigenous company, Oriental Energy Resources Limited (OERL).

Enhancing Production Capacity

The EMEM FPSO is scheduled to depart Dubai for Nigeria in the first quarter of 2025, with oil production expected to commence by July 2025. The vessel will begin operations at the Okwok oilfield, located in Oil Mining Lease 67, offshore Nigeria. Initially, it will produce 17,000 bpd, gradually ramping up to its full capacity of 30,000 bpd. This increase will significantly boost Nigeria’s crude oil output, which was approximately 1.4 million bpd in November 2024, just short of its OPEC quota of 1.5 million bpd.

Strategic Significance of the Dubai-Based Facility

The decision to construct the FPSO in Dubai highlights the importance of global collaboration in the oil and gas sector. Dubai’s advanced shipbuilding infrastructure and expertise enabled the efficient conversion of the vessel. Once operational in Nigerian waters, the EMEM FPSO will employ advanced extraction and processing technologies, enhancing the country’s production capacity. The project is expected to stimulate economic growth in the Okwok region, creating jobs and supporting local development.

Diversifying Crude Oil Production

Designed specifically for the crude types found in the Okwok field, the EMEM FPSO will produce oil that differs from Nigeria’s traditional light sweet crude. This diversification will help Nigeria meet a broader range of global refinery demands, boosting its competitiveness in the international oil market.

Advantages of the EMEM FPSO

  • Increased Storage Capacity: The vessel boasts a storage capacity of up to 1 million barrels, allowing for efficient surplus management and reducing export delays.
  • Economic Growth: The project is expected to generate significant local employment opportunities, contributing to Nigeria’s wider economic development.
  • Technological Advancement: The use of cutting-edge technology on the FPSO is likely to attract additional investments, promoting further innovation within Nigeria’s oil sector.

Stakeholder Involvement

Oriental Energy Resources Limited holds an 85% stake in the Okwok field, while Addax Petroleum owns the remaining 15%. The FPSO project is entirely funded by OERL, with no financial stake from the United Arab Emirates. Collaboration with Dubai-based Drydocks World for the vessel’s conversion highlights the international partnerships that support large-scale oil and gas projects.

Impact on Nigeria’s OPEC Quota

The additional 30,000 bpd from the EMEM FPSO will not only help Nigeria meet its current OPEC production quota of 1.5 million bpd but may also enable the country to exceed its target. This increase strengthens Nigeria’s position within OPEC and helps stabilise global oil markets by ensuring a steady and reliable supply.

The inauguration of the EMEM FPSO represents a key development for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. By combining local funding with international expertise, Nigeria is poised to enhance its production capabilities, diversify its crude oil offerings, and bolster its standing in the global energy market. This milestone project is expected to have lasting benefits for Nigeria’s economy, technological advancement, and international oil trade relations.
