Nigeria’s CNG Expansion Sees Massive Growth in 2024

Nigeria’s shift to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has seen a dramatic rise in the number of conversion centres, climbing from just seven in 2023 to 158 in 2024 more than 2,000% increase. This growth is part of a broader effort led by the Presidential Committee on CNG (Pi-CNG) to promote cleaner energy and reduce transportation costs.

Programme Director Michael Oluwagbemi revealed that the government aims to convert five million petrol vehicles to CNG, creating a ₦5 trillion market opportunity. Conversion kits cost about ₦1 million per vehicle, and the initiative is supported by plans to establish a CNG manufacturing hub in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

Key Developments:

  • Private Sector Involvement: Pi-CNG has secured a $50 million deal to support 100 new conversion workshops and 60 refuelling sites across 18 states.
  • Capacity Building: Plans include setting up 1,000 training centres and partnerships with institutions like the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology to certify mechanics.
  • Economic Impact: CNG use is expected to cut transport costs by up to 70%, benefiting consumers and boosting local economies.

With ongoing partnerships and government mandates prioritising CNG vehicles, Nigeria is well-positioned to lead in the clean energy transition in Africa.
