The Nigerian Institution of Petroleum Engineers (NiPeTE), previously known as the Petroleum Division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, is rebranding to better reflect its focus and strengthen its role in the country’s oil and gas sector.
A step forward for the industry
Now to be known as the Nigerian Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineers, the organisation says this change is more than a name. According to the chairperson, Prisca Kanebi, it reflects a renewed commitment to professionalism, national development, and technical excellence in the energy industry.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, Kanebi explained that this decision followed wide consultations and a recognition of the evolving roles engineers must play in both the academic and industrial sides of oil and gas.
Approvals and progress at the National Assembly
The Institute has successfully registered the new name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). It has also secured approval from the National Technical Board for its certification programmes, and the proposed bill for its statutory recognition has passed a second reading at the National Assembly.
A public hearing on the bill will be announced soon, she added.
Collaboration and clarity
NiPeTE is partnering with academics and industry experts to share knowledge and influence better policy decisions. Kanebi urged practising engineers in Nigeria and abroad to register via the official website.
She also addressed some recent claims made by opposing groups, urging the public to ignore what she called politically motivated efforts to discredit the Institute’s leadership.
Kanebi clarified that the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is not connected to these actions and that the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), being a non-statutory group, has only acted on limited information.
Leadership and unity
The leadership of NiPeTE remains intact and focused. The Institute’s Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Executive Committee, and regional coordinators are working together to build a stronger, united voice for petroleum and gas engineers in Nigeria.
Kanebi said the internal structure is stable and committed to its goals, regardless of outside interference.
