In a major push to increase Nigeria’s domestic gas usage, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its partners have begun the construction of five mini Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. These plants, once completed, will process 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d), providing cleaner and more affordable energy across the country.
Five New LNG Plants Set for Nigeria
The newly launched projects include:
- NNPC Prime LNG
- NGML/Gasnexus LNG
- BUA LNG
- Highland LNG
- LNG Arete
NNPCL holds major stakes in three of them, with 90% ownership in Prime LNG, 50% in NGML/Gasnexus LNG, and 10% in BUA LNG. Meanwhile, Highland LNG and LNG Arete are private sector-led initiatives.
Why This Matters for Nigeria
At the launch event, NNPCL’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, emphasised that natural gas is the future of Nigeria’s energy sector. He explained that these mini LNG plants will make gas more accessible, especially in areas without pipelines, ensuring reliable energy for homes, businesses, and industries.
“Gas is the bridge to our economic future. These projects will create jobs, drive industrialisation, and provide sustainable energy solutions for Nigerians,” Kyari stated.
Government’s Support for Gas Expansion
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, hailed the LNG plants as a game-changer for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. He reiterated that the government is committed to using natural gas to power industries, cut carbon emissions, and improve the well-being of Nigerians.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, also expressed his gratitude, noting that the plants will create job opportunities, attract investments, and support local businesses.
“We fully support this project and will ensure a secure and productive environment for its success,” the governor assured.
A Step Towards Energy Independence
This initiative is part of the Federal Government’s Gas Revolution Agenda, aimed at maximising Nigeria’s vast gas reserves for economic growth. The new LNG plants are expected to improve energy security, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and promote cleaner energy alternatives.
With construction underway, Nigerians can look forward to a future where affordable, locally-produced gas is readily available to power homes, businesses, and industries across the country.
