The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has increased the retail price of petrol to ₦835 per litre in Lagos and ₦839 per litre in Abuja.
Our correspondents observed on Wednesday that the national oil company implemented the new price regime across its filling stations in both cities, marking another upward adjustment in pump prices amid rising costs in the downstream petroleum sector.
The latest increase follows Dangote Refinery’s price hike on January 26, 2026, with Ex-Depot Price rising from ₦699 to ₦799 and MRS stations selling at ₦839, prompting NNPCL to adjust its prices competitively.
In Lagos, long queues were already forming at some NNPCL retail outlets as motorists rushed to buy fuel at the new rate. In Abuja, commuters and transport operators expressed concern that the price hike would immediately translate into higher transport fares.
Petrol price movements in Nigeria have remained closely tied to global oil market trends and domestic cost structures since the removal of subsidy. Analysts warn that any further rise in crude oil prices or weakening of the naira could push pump prices even higher in the coming weeks.
