The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced plans to establish five mini Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. This ambitious project is set to transform the region into a gas hub, boosting domestic energy supply and creating jobs.
A Strategic Move for Energy Security
The initiative, revealed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, aims to strengthen Nigeria’s gas infrastructure and increase local utilisation. According to NNPCL Group CEO Mele Kyari, the mini LNG plants will complement ongoing efforts to expand the nation’s energy capabilities. The project aligns with NNPCL’s broader vision of ensuring energy security, sustainability, and affordability.
Economic and Industrial Benefits
The plants, expected to launch in early 2025, will focus on providing gas for industrial and domestic use, including supporting the growing auto-gas and compressed natural gas (CNG) markets. This development is part of a larger framework to harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves, reduce fuel imports, and enhance energy access across the country.
Ajaokuta Steel Plant Revival
In addition to the LNG project, efforts to revitalise the Ajaokuta Steel Company are gaining momentum. Akpoti-Uduaghan noted that agreements with the original builders have been finalised, with work set to begin in 2025. The revived steel plant is expected to manufacture essential components for the oil and gas sector, fostering local production and reducing reliance on imports.
Collaborative Efforts for National Progress
NNPCL is also exploring partnerships with private sector players to expand gas infrastructure, including floating LNG projects targeting both domestic and international markets. These initiatives are seen as pivotal in driving economic diversification and achieving Nigeria’s energy goals.
This bold move by NNPCL signals a significant step toward transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape, with lasting benefits for the economy and local communities.
