Ogun State is moving closer to becoming an oil-producing state as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) advances plans to begin commercial drilling at the Eba oil well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
A technical team from NNPCL recently visited the site after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved commercial exploration. The visit marks a key step toward mobilising equipment, personnel, and infrastructure for production.
Joint Inspection Confirms Readiness
NNPCL officials carried out the inspection with representatives from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and security agencies. The team assessed operational readiness and reviewed safety, regulatory, and technical requirements ahead of drilling.
Hussein Aliyu, Project Coordinator for Enserv, led the NNPCL delegation. The team included Wasiu Adeniyi, Onwugba Kelechi, Engr. Rabiu M. Audu, Ojonoka Braimah, Ahmad Usman, Akinbosola Oluwaseyi, Salisu Nuhu, James Amezhinim, Yusuf Abdul-Azeez, Amararu Isukul, and Livinus J. Kigbu.
Earlier geological studies confirmed hydrocarbon deposits in the Ogun Waterside axis. These findings triggered further technical evaluations and regulatory engagement. The Ogun State Government later verified the well’s coordinates independently and confirmed that the discovery falls within its territory.
Economic Boost in Focus
Governor Dapo Abiodun described the project as a major milestone for the state. He said commercial drilling would stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and attract stronger federal investment to Ogun’s coastal communities.
He added that oil production could diversify the state’s revenue sources and support infrastructure and industrial development.
Security and Strategic Expansion
Security agencies, including naval personnel, have protected the site for more than 18 months with backing from the state government. Their presence aims to secure facilities and ensure smooth project execution.
The Eba project supports Nigeria’s strategy to expand oil production beyond the Niger Delta and develop frontier basins nationwide.
Industry stakeholders say the next phase will focus on regulatory approvals, environmental management, community engagement, and the seamless launch of commercial operations.
The Ogun State Government also thanked President Tinubu for supporting frontier basin development and promoting broader participation in the country’s energy resources.
