Ogun Oil Exploration Advances as Eba Island Project Gains Momentum

Ogun State has moved a step closer to joining Nigeria's league of oil-producing states following significant progress in crude oil exploration activities at Eba Island in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

The exploration programme gathered fresh momentum after the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, granted Ogun Frontier Exploration Status, paving the way for intensified hydrocarbon prospecting within the state's frontier basin.

Project updates released by the Ogun State Government show that several critical pre-drilling milestones have now been completed. These include the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), bathymetric, topographical and geotechnical surveys, alongside the acquisition of all statutory approvals from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Federal Ministry of Environment.

The project has now entered a more advanced phase, with civil construction works already underway at the exploration site. Well intervention and re-entry equipment have also been mobilised, signalling readiness for drilling and subsurface evaluation activities.

State officials said the exploration campaign forms part of a broader strategy to unlock the commercial hydrocarbon potential within Ogun's frontier acreage, diversify the state's revenue base and attract long-term investments into the energy sector.

Beyond potential crude oil production, the project is expected to stimulate economic activity through job creation, infrastructure development and increased participation of local businesses in upstream petroleum operations.

The government maintained that every stage of the exercise is being executed in compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements, noting that securing the necessary approvals before field operations reflects its commitment to responsible resource development.

If commercial quantities of hydrocarbons are confirmed, Ogun would become one of Nigeria's newest oil-producing states, expanding the country's upstream footprint beyond the traditional Niger Delta and strengthening domestic crude oil production capacity.

The Eba Island exploration project also aligns with ongoing national efforts to increase reserve replacement, open new frontier basins and attract fresh upstream investment as Nigeria seeks to sustain long-term energy security and maximise the value of its petroleum resources.
