Oil Output Hits 1.8m bpd as NNPC Targets 2m bpd by 2027

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) says Nigeria’s crude oil production has increased by 600,000 barrels per day (bpd), from approximately 1.2 million bpd to 1.8 million bpd, following reforms in the oil and gas sector.

NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, disclosed this on Tuesday during an energy discussion titled “Nigeria’s Reform Agenda: Competing for Energy Capital” at the 2026 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) in the United Arab Emirates.

Ojulari attributed the reported increase to the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, improved investment conditions, better investment decisions and stronger partnerships between NNPC and industry operators.

He said the company was targeting production of two million barrels per day by 2027, with plans to increase output from existing assets, maintain production infrastructure and accelerate projects expected to deliver additional volumes.

The NNPC chief said sustaining the production gains would require protecting existing output while addressing operational challenges and improving the performance of producing assets.

On domestic gas development, Ojulari disclosed that Nigeria was targeting daily gas production of 10 billion standard cubic feet by 2027 and 12 billion standard cubic feet by 2030.

He also said the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline was completed in August 2026, while the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline was expected to begin delivering gas to Abuja before the end of the year.

According to him, the projects are expected to support power generation, data centres and industrial activities.

On the transition to alternative fuels, Ojulari said more than 400 compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion centres had been established, while over 1,000 trucks used for petroleum product transportation had switched to CNG.

He further disclosed that commercial agreements covering approximately $20bn in investments had been concluded for major oil and gas developments.

The projects include TotalEnergies' Ubeta development, Shell's Bonga South-West project and Eni's Zabazaba development.

Ojulari also identified ongoing efforts to attract additional international partners, including the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Chinese investors interested in Nigeria's refining industry.

He said NNPC was strengthening its engagement with international service companies to expand local capacity and support project delivery.

On regional gas infrastructure, the GCEO said participating countries had completed the necessary agreements for the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, while Nigeria, Algeria and Niger had also reached alignment on the proposed Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline.

The disclosures were made at ADIPEC 2026, where industry leaders, investors and policymakers are examining investment opportunities, energy security and developments across the global energy market.
