Oil Prices Extend Decline as Iran–US Peace Talks Ease Supply Risk

Global crude oil benchmarks extended their downward trend on Tuesday as easing geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran improved market sentiment and reduced immediate supply risk fears.

As at the time of writing 06:35 am ( WAT), Brent crude traded around $77.40 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) hovered near $73.58 per barrel, both recording marginal losses of 0.64% and 0.38% respectively.

The latest price movement was largely driven by reports that diplomatic discussions between Washington and Tehran are making progress, including a reported US decision to waive sanctions on Iran’s oil sector during a 60-day ceasefire period agreed earlier in the month. The development has eased concerns over potential supply disruptions from one of the world’s key oil producers.

Market sentiment was further weakened by reports of increased crude movement through strategic shipping routes. According to shipping data cited by Bloomberg, at least three supertankers carrying approximately 6 million barrels of Iranian crude were observed transiting toward the Strait of Hormuz, signalling a gradual return of supply flows from the region.

Analysts say the reopening of crude flows from Iran, alongside improved diplomatic signals, has reinforced bearish pressure on prices. However, they caution that the situation remains fragile, with any breakdown in negotiations capable of quickly reversing recent losses.

ING commodity strategists noted that while markets are pricing in a gradual normalisation of oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, uncertainty remains over the speed and stability of the process. They added that price action suggests traders are increasingly optimistic, despite lingering geopolitical risks.

Sparta Commodities also observed that rising transit volumes are being interpreted as a proxy for improving diplomatic conditions, although markets are likely to remain volatile as investors balance easing supply fears against the risk of renewed conflict.

The latest decline also follows broader market reactions to shifting geopolitical dynamics, with traders increasingly focusing on diplomatic developments rather than supply constraints. U.S. gasoline prices have reportedly extended their downward trend for a sixth consecutive week, reflecting broader softness across the energy complex.

Overall, while easing tensions have provided short-term relief to global supply concerns, analysts maintain that oil markets remain highly sensitive to developments in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global crude shipments.
