Oil Prices Jump 3% on Fear of Widening Supply Disruptions

Global crude oil prices rallied sharply on Monday as traders priced in escalating geopolitical risks across two critical energy corridors, the Caribbean and the Black Sea, raising fresh concerns about potential supply disruptions.

Benchmark prices climbed close to 3% in early trading, driven by heightened fears that sanctions enforcement against Venezuela and renewed Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian export infrastructure could tighten global oil flows at a time when the market is already fragile.

At the time of writing 8:00 WAT, Brent crude rose 2.51% to $61.99 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude traded at $57.92 per barrel, up 2.48%. Murban crude gained 1.84% to $63.18 per barrel, underscoring broad-based strength across major grades. In contrast, U.S. natural gas slipped 0.78% to $3.953 per MMBtu, reflecting a divergence between oil and gas fundamentals.

The price surge follows a weekend of intensifying maritime and military developments that have injected a new layer of risk premium into oil markets.

Geopolitical flashpoints reignite supply risk premium

Oil markets reacted swiftly after reports that the United States seized a second oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast and began pursuing a third vessel, identified as Bella 1, as part of a newly declared “total blockade” targeting sanctioned crude shipments linked to the Maduro government.

U.S. officials allege that the vessels are part of a so-called “dark fleet” operating under false flags to evade international sanctions. If the third tanker is intercepted, it would mark the third seizure in less than two weeks, signalling a more aggressive enforcement posture by Washington.

Although Venezuelan crude represents a relatively modest share of global supply, traders fear that sustained naval pressure could disrupt flows to key buyers, particularly China, forcing refiners to scramble for alternative barrels and tightening spot markets.

Black Sea attacks deepen fears around Russian exports

At the same time, fresh Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia’s Volna terminal in the Krasnodar region added to market anxiety. The attack reportedly damaged two vessels and two piers, triggering a massive fire spanning roughly 1,500 square metres at a strategically important export hub near the Crimean Bridge.

The Volna terminal plays a key role in Russia’s energy logistics, and its disruption has renewed concerns about the security of Black Sea exports, especially those linked to Russia’s shadow fleet operations. Analysts note that direct hits on vessels represent an escalation that could further complicate Russian crude movements already constrained by sanctions.

Market outlook: risk-driven rally, volatility ahead

For now, the oil rally reflects geopolitical risk rather than immediate physical shortages, but sentiment has clearly shifted. With tensions flaring simultaneously in the Americas and Eastern Europe, traders are increasingly wary that even limited disruptions could snowball into broader supply challenges.

From a Nigerian perspective, higher crude prices offer short-term fiscal relief for an oil-dependent economy grappling with foreign exchange pressures and budget constraints. However, sustained volatility could also feed into higher fuel import costs and inflationary risks if prices continue to climb.

As markets digest the evolving situation, analysts warn that oil prices are likely to remain headline-driven in the near term, with any further escalation in Venezuela or the Black Sea capable of pushing prices higher still.
