Oil Prices Slip Despite Fresh U.S. Strikes on Iran

Global oil prices slipped as investors looked beyond the latest military escalation between the United States and Iran, concluding that the conflict has yet to cause any significant disruption to physical crude supplies from the Middle East. Although fresh U.S. airstrikes and renewed Iranian threats intensified geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, traders remained focused on the continued flow of oil exports, signalling that supply fundamentals continue to outweigh military developments.

As at the time of writing 06:30 a.m. (WAT), Brent crude traded at $84.56 per barrel, down 0.46%, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) stood at $79.40 per barrel, down 0.25%, according to Oilprice.com.

The decline came after the United States launched another wave of strikes against Iran, expanding attacks on military installations along the country's southern coast. According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation targeted Iranian coastal defence systems, cruise missile storage sites, launch positions and military facilities near Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Qeshm, Greater Tunb Island and other strategic locations overlooking the Persian Gulf.

The latest daytime offensive followed overnight attacks that Washington said destroyed dozens of additional military targets linked to Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil transit routes.

Iran responded by escalating its rhetoric, warning that it could extend attacks beyond the Strait of Hormuz to other global energy shipping corridors serving the United States and its allies. Iranian officials also pointed to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where previous Houthi attacks forced commercial vessels to reroute around southern Africa, significantly increasing freight costs and shipping delays.

The renewed security concerns are already influencing tanker operations. Reuters reported that several tanker operators have declined to participate in U.S.-escorted transits through the Strait of Hormuz following recent attacks on commercial vessels. While the escorted convoys helped restore the movement of millions of barrels of crude after last month's ceasefire, shipping companies are once again prioritising crew safety over shorter voyage times.

Washington also tightened economic pressure on Tehran by imposing fresh sanctions on seven individuals and entities accused of helping Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) procure weapons. According to U.S. officials, the sanctions target companies and individuals operating in Iran, Russia and Nigeria that allegedly supported the procurement network.

Despite the renewed military exchanges, analysts said the crude market is increasingly distinguishing between geopolitical headlines and actual supply losses. Although the conflict has intensified, physical oil exports from the Gulf have not experienced another large-scale disruption, prompting traders to remain cautious about pricing in a prolonged supply shock.

For Nigeria, the current market presents mixed implications. Brent crude remaining above $84 per barrel continues to support government oil revenues and export earnings. However, prolonged instability around the Strait of Hormuz could still increase freight charges, marine insurance premiums and replacement costs for refined petroleum products, creating fresh pressure on domestic fuel prices even if crude production remains largely unaffected.
