The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has directed petroleum retail outlet operators across the country to immediately calibrate and verify their dispensing pumps and totalizers following a regulatory directive on under-dispensing of petroleum products.
PETROAN, in a circular signed by its National President, Prince Billy S. Gillis-Harry, on September 22, 2026, said the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had raised serious concerns over reported cases of under-dispensing at retail outlets nationwide.
The association said the directive requires operators to ensure that all dispensing equipment is properly calibrated and verified so that consumers receive the full quantity of petroleum products for which they pay.
PETROAN said NMDPRA has intensified inspection and enforcement activities nationwide, with retail outlets found to be under-dispensing, operating improperly calibrated equipment or compromising dispensing accuracy expected to take immediate corrective action.
The association warned its members that persistent or serious violations could attract regulatory sanctions, including the revocation of operating licences in accordance with applicable regulations.
PETROAN said it was specifically requested by NMDPRA to notify its members and support full compliance with the directive, urging operators to treat the matter with the utmost seriousness and act immediately across all retail outlets under their management.
As part of the compliance measures, the association instructed members to conduct immediate inspection, calibration and verification of their dispensing equipment and maintain accurate records of calibration and maintenance activities.
PETROAN also urged retail operators to cooperate fully with regulatory inspection teams and uphold transparency, integrity and consumer protection in their operations.
The association said its position was consistent with its commitment to professionalism, regulatory compliance and best industry practices, stressing the need to protect consumers and preserve the credibility and reputation of petroleum retail operations across Nigeria.
