Dr Gabriel Ogbechie of Rainoil Group, Rabiu Abdullahi Umar of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and Peter Mbah of Pinnacle Oil and Gas have emerged as the three nominees in the Downstream Sector Personality of the Year category of the Petroleumprice.ng Recognition and Awards 2026.
The three nominees represent different areas of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry, spanning private-sector operations, petroleum regulation and downstream infrastructure and logistics.
Dr Gabriel Ogbechie — Rainoil Group
Dr Gabriel Ogbechie is the founder and Group Managing Director of Rainoil Limited, an indigenous downstream oil and gas company he established in 1997.
A Production Engineering graduate of the University of Benin, Ogbechie began his career as a factory engineer before working with PricewaterhouseCoopers and later Ascon Oil, where he headed the Sales and Operations Unit.
Under his leadership, Rainoil has expanded across petroleum product storage, logistics, retail, and LPG operations. The company has three petroleum product storage depots with a combined capacity of about 150 million litres and more than 150 retail outlets and LPG plants, according to company and corporate profiles.
Ogbechie has also supported philanthropic initiatives through the Gabriel Ogbechie Foundation and Rainoil’s community empowerment programmes, including scholarships, healthcare interventions, and community development projects.
Rabiu Abdullahi Umar — NMDPRA ACE
Rabiu Abdullahi Umar is listed as an Authority Chief Executive (ACE) of NMDPRA and brings a regulatory perspective to the Downstream Sector Personality of the Year category. Petroleumprice.ng’s awards announcement identifies him among the three nominees for the category.
The NMDPRA regulates Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum operations, including refining, petroleum-product infrastructure, transportation, storage, and retail operations.
Umar’s nomination therefore represents the regulatory side of the downstream petroleum industry alongside the private-sector nominees in the category.
Peter Mbah — Pinnacle Oil
Peter Mbah is the Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited, an indigenous company active across petroleum trading, marketing, distribution, storage and retail operations.
Mbah has more than 28 years of professional and business experience spanning oil and gas sales and distribution, import trade and maritime logistics, according to his company profile. He holds an MBA from IESE Business School in Barcelona, an LL.B from the University of East London, and an LL.M in Maritime Law from Lagos State University.
Pinnacle has developed offshore intake and offtake infrastructure, including Single Point Mooring and Conventional Buoy Mooring facilities, as well as storage infrastructure in the Lekki Free Trade Zone. The company also operates across petroleum product marketing and distribution.
The three nominees bring different industry perspectives to the Downstream Sector Personality of the Year category, with Ogbechie representing an established indigenous downstream operator, Umar the regulatory side of the sector, and Mbah the petroleum trading, logistics and infrastructure segment.
Voting in the Petroleumprice.ng Recognition and Awards 2026 is ongoing and will close on October 31, 2026. The category is one of five in this year’s awards programme.
