Refiners Face Margin Squeeze as Dangote Refinery Ramps Up

The Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, one of the world’s largest single-train refineries, is scaling up operations, causing global refiners to brace for potential margin pressures. The facility, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, began operations in early 2024 and is currently operating at 50% capacity, exporting products worldwide.

The refinery’s increased output is expected to intensify competition in the global refined products market, potentially squeezing profit margins for existing refiners. Analysts suggest that the Dangote Refinery‘s strategic location and advanced technology could enable it to produce refined products at a lower cost, challenging other market players.

In addition to its operational scale-up, the Dangote Refinery is pursuing long-term crude supply agreements, including with U.S. suppliers, to ensure a steady feedstock for its operations. This move underscores the refinery’s ambition to secure a significant foothold in the global refining industry.

The refinery’s impact is not limited to international markets. Domestically, it aims to meet 100% of Nigeria’s refined product needs, reducing the country’s dependence on imports and potentially altering regional trade dynamics.

However, the refinery’s expansion has not been without challenges. In June 2024, a minor fire incident occurred, though it did not significantly impact operations. Additionally, securing consistent crude supply and navigating financial considerations remain critical factors for its sustained success.

As the Dangote Refinery continues to scale up, global refiners will need to adapt to the evolving competitive landscape, strategizing to maintain profitability amid the increased supply of refined products entering the market.
