At this stage, light naphtha a precursor to petrol is produced, but further refinement is essential to create the petrol suitable for vehicle use. This process requires blending light naphtha with additives like reformates and alkylates to enhance its octane rating.
The Port Harcourt refinery, currently operating between 65% and 70% capacity, is producing light naphtha. However, its platformer unit, responsible for creating reformates critical for blending, is not functioning optimally. This shortfall necessitates reliance on external sources such as Indorama, a private petrochemical company, to supply crack C5 a component used in blending petrol.

Efforts to refurbish the refinery under a $1.5 billion rehabilitation project are ongoing. According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), significant strides have been made, particularly in the old refinery, which has been the focus due to equipment lead times for the new facility.
