The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has invited the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to appear before it on April 29, 2026, to respond to audit concerns involving a cumulative sum of 210 trillion naira spanning 2017 to 2023.
The committee said the Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, is expected to lead the delegation. Other officials listed to appear include former GCEO Mele Kyari, former Chief Financial Officer Umar Ajia, Bala Wunti, and the company’s external auditors.
The decision followed a motion presented by Osita Izunaso and supported by Adams Oshiomhole during the committee’s review of audit reports in Abuja.
Chairman of the committee, Ahmed Wadada, stated that the panel requires comprehensive clarification on several issues raised by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation. He noted that previous submissions from the company did not sufficiently address the concerns identified in the reports.
According to Wadada, the committee is seeking a detailed breakdown of figures classified as liabilities, including retention costs, legal obligations, and audit related expenses. Additional explanations are also required on expenditures tied to joint venture cash calls and other financial entries captured in the audit findings.
He emphasised that the requested clarifications are necessary for the committee to effectively carry out its oversight responsibilities and urged the company to comply with the scheduled appearance.
During the session, Abdul Ningi highlighted the importance of adherence to legislative summons, noting that cooperation with oversight institutions is essential for ensuring accountability.
The committee subsequently granted the NNPCL a two week window to respond, stressing the need for full engagement with the issues raised in the audit reports.
