As Nigeria accelerates LPG adoption and deepens its downstream gas infrastructure, cylinder safety remains a critical component of the value chain. Techno Oil says it is positioning itself at the centre of this transition with what it describes as one of the most advanced gas cylinder manufacturing operations in West Africa.
According to the company, its objective is clear even before production begins: to manufacture the strongest and safest gas cylinders in Nigeria.
Manufacturing Process: Designed Around Safety and Compliance
Techno Oil states that it does not compromise on safety standards. The company maintains strict compliance with Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) throughout its production cycle.
Before forming begins, the company conducts extensive laboratory tests on steel sheets. These tests verify thickness, chemical composition, and physical properties to ensure every material meets required specifications.
Production stages include:
- Forming of half cylinders
- Fabrication of guard rings and foot rings
- Trimming and automated welding of components
At every stage, Techno Oil performs quality checks to safeguard structural integrity.
Immediately after welding, each cylinder is heated to 900 degrees centigrade. This heat treatment restores and normalises the chemical and physical properties of the steel.
Every unit then undergoes hydrostatic pressure testing under extreme conditions. Any cylinder that fails this test is removed from the production line.
Cylinders that pass proceed to:
- Shot blasting for surface cleaning
- Zinc metallisation to prevent corrosion during long-term use
- Painting and labelling with quality markings
Even after these processes, quality control experts test the cylinders again before approving them for distribution.
According to Techno Oil, cylinders leave the factory only after completing this full sequence of safety checks.
Addressing Health and Energy Challenges
The company links its investment to broader public health and energy access concerns. Many Nigerian households still rely on firewood and kerosene for cooking, fuels associated with significant indoor air pollution.
Techno Oil notes that reliance on these fuels contributes to approximately 79,000 deaths annually, reinforcing the urgency of accelerating safe LPG adoption.
To support this transition, the company established:
- A 5 million cylinders per annum manufacturing plant
- A 12,000 metric tonnes LPG terminal
Techno Oil describes the facility as the only gas cylinder manufacturing plant of its scale in West Africa. With this capacity, it says the plant can meet cylinder demand across Nigeria and the wider region.
Industrial Impact and Local Capacity
The company acknowledges that several cylinder manufacturing plants in Nigeria have collapsed in the past. However, it states that its model focuses on long-term industrial sustainability, job creation, and environmental responsibility.
Techno Oil estimates that the plant could generate over 250,000 direct and indirect jobs, while strengthening Nigeria’s local manufacturing base.
It further argues that, given existing production capacity, there is little justification for importing gas cylinders into Nigeria. Instead, the company advocates policies that:
- Discourage the importation of substandard cylinders
- Support local manufacturers
- Increase public awareness of certified LPG safety standards
Positioning in the Market
With an annual production capacity of 5 million cylinders, Techno Oil says it is ready to supply both private and institutional buyers.
The company maintains that its cylinders meet national standards and undergo multiple layers of testing before entering the market.
As Nigeria advances toward cleaner cooking solutions and deeper LPG penetration, Techno Oil is positioning its manufacturing capability as part of the country’s broader downstream energy transformation.
