The Journey of Otedola From School Dropout to Billionaire

Femi Otedola has opened up on how he turned early academic failure into a springboard for one of Nigeria’s most remarkable business success stories.

The 62-year-old billionaire, in his memoir Making It Big, recounts how he struggled through school, dropped out, and chose business over academics, a decision that defined his rise to wealth and influence.

Otedola began his education at the University of Lagos Staff School in 1968, where he mixed with the children of top officials. Despite the privileged setting, he repeatedly finished at the bottom of his class. His parents later moved him to Methodist Boys’ High School in Lagos and then Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo, but the poor results continued.

He admits bluntly in his memoir: “Academia and I were not compatible.”

First Taste of Business

Otedola’s turning point came when his father, Sir Michael Otedola, set up Impact Press in Surulere, Lagos, during the late 1970s. Fascinated by the printing machines, the young Otedola abandoned his A Levels and immersed himself in the business.

At 25, he became managing director of Impact Press. He later struck a deal to work as a sales consultant, earning commissions that he reinvested. By aggressively targeting advertising agencies and large corporations, he built a solid client base and carved out financial independence.

Launching Centre Force Limited

When his father entered politics in 1991, Otedola seized the chance to branch out. In 1994, he launched Centre Force Limited with ₦10 million in start-up capital. The company grew rapidly, giving him the confidence to look beyond printing and into energy.

That bold move eventually led him to Forte Oil, where he transformed the company into one of Nigeria’s leading downstream players. He later shifted focus to power generation with Geregu Power Plc, and expanded into finance and investments through FirstHoldco Plc.

A Story of Resilience and Risk

Otedola credits his success to resilience and an appetite for risk. He admits that his mother initially disapproved of his decision to abandon formal education, but his passion for business proved unstoppable.

“All I wanted was to get involved in business,” he writes, stressing that setbacks in school only sharpened his drive to succeed.

Today, Otedola ranks among Africa’s most influential businessmen, with interests spanning energy, finance, and investments. His journey from struggling student to billionaire underscores the power of determination and practical experience in shaping success.
