Troops Uncover Illegal Crude Processing Site in Rivers Forest

Troops operating under the Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), have uncovered an illegal crude oil processing site within the Orashi National Forest in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The discovery was made during an anti-crude theft operation conducted on June 3 by personnel drawn from the 16 Brigade, Garrison, and 5 Battalion, according to security sources.

The site, located deep inside the forest reserve, was allegedly being used for unauthorized petroleum processing activities.

Items recovered during the operation included two drum ovens, two cooling systems, two receiving containers, two waste pits, and a galvanized pipeline estimated to be about 100 metres long.

Military sources said the recovered equipment was linked to illegal refining operations and was handled in accordance with procedures guiding Operation Delta Safe activities.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb crude oil theft, dismantle unauthorized refining facilities, and protect oil and gas infrastructure across the Niger Delta.

Authorities have repeatedly identified illegal refining and oil theft as key challenges affecting crude production, government revenue, and the environment in oil-producing communities.

Security officials said surveillance and clearance operations are continuing in the area as part of broader measures aimed at identifying and disrupting illegal petroleum-related activities.

Operation Delta Safe, a multi-agency security task force, has intensified anti-bunkering operations in recent months amid efforts to reduce crude oil theft and safeguard strategic energy assets across the region.
