U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday accused Iran of shooting down an American Apache helicopter operating near the Strait of Hormuz, a development that could complicate recent diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said he had been informed by military officials that Iranian forces brought down the aircraft during a patrol mission over the strategic waterway.
“I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote. He added that the two pilots aboard the aircraft were “safe and uninjured.”
The U.S. president also signalled that Washington was considering its response, stating, “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”
The allegation comes after U.S. military officials confirmed that an AH-64 Apache helicopter went down near the coast of Oman during operations in the region. Both crew members were rescued and reported safe. However, military authorities had earlier indicated that the cause of the incident remained under investigation and had not publicly attributed the loss of the aircraft to hostile action.
Trump's remarks introduce a new element of uncertainty into relations between the United States and Iran at a time when both sides appeared to be making progress toward a potential agreement. Just a day earlier, the president had expressed optimism about ongoing discussions, telling reporters that negotiations were in the “final throes” and suggesting a deal could be reached within days.
