U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States has suspended a planned military strike against Iran after receiving what he described as a request from Iran and other Middle Eastern countries to allow diplomatic efforts to proceed toward a broader agreement.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social account on Sunday, Trump said the proposed framework includes the immediate, complete and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures to address Iran's nuclear programme.
According to Trump, the United States had been prepared to launch military action against Iran at an unprecedented level.
"The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II," he wrote.
Trump said he agreed to cancel the planned attack after being informed that the outlines of a possible agreement had been reached.
"Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to," he said.
He added that his decision to suspend military action was conditional on progress toward a final agreement.
"Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL," Trump stated.
The U.S. president also said Israel had joined the commitment to suspend military action while negotiations continue.
"The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment," he wrote.
Trump concluded his statement by urging all parties involved in the negotiations to move quickly toward finalising the proposed agreement.
"Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE," he said.
The statement did not provide further details on the proposed agreement or indicate whether Iran or other governments had publicly confirmed the reported diplomatic request.
